Top 23 Tips of SEO You Must Know

This is part 4 of the 4 parts of Top 23 of SEO Tips

15.  Article exchanges

You’ve heard of link exchanges, useless as they generally are. Article exchanges are like link exchanges, only much more useful. You publish someone else’s article on the history of pudding pops with a link back to their site. They publish your article on the top ten pudding pop flavors in Viet Nam, with a link back to your site. You both have content. You both get high quality links. (More on high quality links in other tips.)

16.   Titles for links

Links can get titles, too. Not only does this help visually impaired surfers know where you are sending them, but some search engines figure this into their relevancy for a page.
Not anchor text. Don’t overdo the anchor text. You don’t want all your inbound links looking the same, because that looks like automation - something Google frowns upon. Use your URL sometimes, your company name other times, “Gumbo Pudding Pop” occasionally, “Get gumbo pudding pops” as well, “Gumbo-flavored pudding pops” some other times, etc.

17.   Site map

A big site needs a site map, which should be linked to from every page on the site. This will help the search engine robots find every page with just two clicks. A small site needs a site map, too. It’s called the navigation bar.

Submit sitemap to all major search engines. Use sitemap generator wordpress plugin for easy creating and submitting sitemap.xml file.

18. Meta tags:

Use and Metatags. Metatags generally do not have that much importance now-days but Yahoo and MSN still consider Meta tags. Include post description in meta tag. Sometimes this description will come as search result description on search result pages. Use meta tag to include keywords, around 15-20 keywords will be sufficient. Do not use keywords that are not in your post content. Use All in One SEO pack plugin to add different Description and keywords meta tags.

19. Avoid Duplicate content

Wordpress blogs have drawback of duplicate contents. Content is said to duplicate when same content is accessible from two different urls. Concentrate on unique content. Fresh content is also important for fast ranking as crawlers love fresh content.

Use robots Noindex meta tag and robots.txt file for avoiding duplicate contents. Use post excerpt on index, archives and category pages. You can use evermore wordpres plugin for wordpress blogs for showing post excerpts.

20. File Naming

There are many of the search engines indexing file names and have found that using relative keywords in this area will play a role in your overall search engine marketing strategy.

Instead of naming your file pagename.asp, you would name it keyword-phrase.asp or page-name.asp. Always use hyphens (-) to separate the words in your file names, use all lower case for file naming, this includes images too.Visitors to your site will appreciate the clean URI paths which are easy to remember and bookmark. Always try to provide the visitor with the shortest URI path.

This is not an area to stuff keywords. Files should be named appropriately as part of the overall theme and should be relevant to the on page content.

22. Try to get your keyword phrase inside incoming links

Inbound links are a great way to improve your page rank. But you can’t really control how people link to your pages. Chances are they won’t use a phrase that has anything even remotely close to your keyword phrase. Remember that they are doing you a favor by linking to you. If it makes sense, you can ask them to change the text of the link, but be careful, as people can be very touchy, and you might just get your link removed.

Another way to get your keyword phrase in inbound links is to provide your customers with the link text ready-made

23. If you must use Flash, always include alternative text

Flash and search engines don’t mix well, but if you must use flash you should include alternate text that describes exactly what the Flash element includes. And if you use Flash for your entire site, you should always do an alternate version of the complete site in HTML so that search engines and non-Flash browsers can view it as well.
